I have sought throughout my professional career to share this sense of discovery and to represent my subjects and their characters with the detailed authenticity that comes from first-hand knowledge. I have been self-employed in the field of fine art since 1978 following a career in commercial art. My sculptures and paintings have been distributed through galleries in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, and through private commissions from clients in Canada and the United States. The most interesting series of commissions I worked on was for an American businessman who wanted unique bronzes. He had a great passion for things from the past, and demanded work that was well researched, accurate and detailed. Over a 10-year period I was asked to create all sorts of sculptures, including three kinds of dinosaurs. It was quite a challenge to shift from contemporary wildlife to extinct species, but it was the type of task that allows one to grow as an artist. Over the past few years I have specialized in mixed media sculptures. I think of these one-of-a-kind pieces as "miniature dioramas" because I try to build in as much of the habitat as possible to show an animal or bird in its environment. I often include other creatures in the settings, partly to satisfy my own creativity, but also to see the viewers' delight when they discover a ladybug on a leaf or a mouse hidden in the shadow of a tuft of grass.
